ROUTE 1

The Classic Picos Triangle

Potes → Panes → Cangas de Onís → Puerto del Pontón → Riaño → San Glorio → Potes
~250 km ~4 hrs riding MODERATE

The iconic Picos loop — every rider in the region does it. From Ojedo/Potes, take the N-621 north through the Desfiladero de La Hermida gorge — near-vertical limestone walls, road pinned to the riverbank for 20 km. Reach Panes, then loop east to Cangas de Onís. Climb the N-625 through the Desfiladero de los Beyos gorge (narrower, with tunnels and rock overhangs) up to Puerto del Pontón at 1,280 m. Descend to Riaño on the León side, then return to Potes over the Puerto de San Glorio pass at 1,604 m — the highest paved pass in the region.

Highlights

  • Bear statue at the San Glorio summit viewpoint (Collado de Llesba)
  • Deer frequently spotted on the northern slopes
  • Two spectacular gorges: La Hermida + Los Beyos
  • Fuel up in Cangas de Onís and Riaño — no stations in the gorges or passes
Ride clockwise (Potes → Panes → Cangas → Riaño → Potes) so you climb San Glorio from the open León side and descend through the tightening valley to Potes.
ROUTE 2

Fuente Dé & the Liébana Valley Dead-End Spur

Ojedo → Mogrovejo → Fuente Dé → Santo Toribio de Liébana → Ojedo
~80 km round trip 2-3 hrs + cable car EASY-MODERATE

From Ojedo, ride south through the lush Liébana Valley on the dead-end road to Fuente Dé, sitting under a massive rock amphitheatre at the head of the valley. The road winds through terraced hillsides, passing through Mogrovejo — one of Spain's most beautiful villages, with its medieval stone tower.

Highlights

  • Cable car at Fuente Dé — Europe's longest single-span cable car rises 753 m in 4 min (€17-18). Leaves you at 1,823 m with panoramic high-Picos views
  • Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery — one of Christianity's most significant pilgrimage sites, believed to house a relic of the True Cross
  • Mogrovejo — designated one of Spain's most beautiful villages, a filming location for Spanish cinema
Great "half-day" route — combine it with Route 5's San Glorio section to make a full day. The Fuente Dé car park is a normal motorcycle stop, no restrictions.
ROUTE 3

Cares Gorge & Cabrales Cheese Country

Ojedo → Panes → Arenas de Cabrales → Poncebos → Sotres → Tresviso → Panes → Ojedo
~130 km round trip 4-5 hrs MODERATE

From Ojedo, ride north through La Hermida gorge to Panes, then east on the AS-114 toward Arenas de Cabrales. Take the dramatic road to Poncebos, where the famous Cares Gorge trail begins. From Poncebos, take the funicular railway up to Bulnes — one of Spain's most remote villages, reachable only by foot or this railway carved through the mountain. Continue the loop to Sotres (one of Asturias' highest villages), then the panoramic CA-1 road to Tresviso, and back via Panes.

Highlights

  • Naranjo de Bulnes viewpoint — the most iconic peak in the Picos at 2,519 m, its limestone face changes colour with the light
  • Cabrales cheese tasting in Arenas de Cabrales — the pungent blue cheese aged in mountain caves
  • Funicular to Bulnes village
  • Optional hike: a short section of the famous Cares Gorge trail (starts at Poncebos)
  • The CA-1 to Tresviso — a motorcyclist favourite for its challenging curves and sweeping views
Stop at La Molinuca bikers' restaurant along the AS-114 — a famous rider hangout with authentic Asturian food beside the river.
ROUTE 4

Coastal Loop — Llanes & Ribadesella

Ojedo → Panes → Llanes → Ribadesella → Covadonga → Cangas de Onís → Potes → Ojedo
~180 km Full day 6+ hrs MODERATE

Break out of the mountains to the wild Cantabrian coast. From Ojedo, ride north through the Hermida gorge to Panes, then northeast to the coast at Llanes. Follow the coastal road east to the surfing town of Ribadesella, then loop back inland through the Sierra del Sueve and back to Potes via Cangas de Onís. Expect ocean views, gentle sweepers along cliffs, and a totally different vibe from the high passes.

Highlights

  • Llanes — brilliant seaside cafés for lunch, golden beaches, fishing village charm
  • Ribadesella — surf town at the mouth of the Sella River
  • Optional detour to the Covadonga Sanctuary — the basilica and holy cave where the Christian reconquest began
  • Dramatic coastal viewpoints along the N-634 / AS-263
This route gives a perfect contrast day — ocean in the morning, mountains in the afternoon. The coastal road has more relaxed, flowing corners compared to the tight gorges.
ROUTE 5

San Glorio Pass & Riaño Reservoir

Ojedo → Potes → Puerto de San Glorio (1,604 m) → Riaño → back
~180 km round trip 3-4 hrs MODERATE-OPEN

From Ojedo, take the N-621 south directly from Potes to Riaño over the Puerto de San Glorio pass at 1,604 m. This is 37 km of fully paved, generously wide road — the southern approach is open and fast, while the descent to Potes tightens progressively as the valley closes in. At the summit, a short paved spur runs to the Collado de Llesba viewpoint, one of the few places you can see the full scale of the central massif from the saddle.

Highlights

  • Prado Bear statue at Collado de Llesba — a short steep walk from the pass summit
  • Panoramic views of the central Picos massif
  • Riaño Reservoir — stunning turquoise lake surrounded by jagged peaks, with the famous "Columpio de Riaño" (giant swing) overlooking the water
  • The café at the pass has "some of the best views in Spain"
  • Cows, deer, and occasionally horses wander the unfenced high pastures
Ideal "first big ride" to get your eye in — few genuine hairpins, mostly third and fourth gear. Go early morning for clear skies and empty roads.
ROUTE 6

The Ebro Gorge & P210 Hidden Gem

Ojedo → San Glorio → Riaño → P-210 → Cervera de Pisuerga → Arija → San Glorio → Ojedo
~200 km round trip 5-6 hrs MODERATE

This is the road that professional motorcycle tour guide Simon Weir called "just magical" — a hidden gem that most visiting riders never find. From Ojedo, ride to Riaño via San Glorio, then turn off the main road onto the P-210. This road snakes past a pair of reservoirs with hills decked in purple heather, then picks up the Ebro River. Three-quarters of the run beside the river is on broad, immaculate tarmac. Then, as the hills rise higher, pressing the river into a gorge, the road is squeezed down to a single lane past a filigree of cliffs and crystal-clear waterfalls.

Highlights

  • The Ebro Gorge section — "just magical" according to touring experts, with filigree cliffs and crystal-clear waterfalls
  • Rolling mountain reservoirs with purple heather-covered hills
  • Some of the smoothest tarmac in the entire region
  • Practically zero traffic — "like Scotland but with even less traffic"
This route connects perfectly with Route 5 — ride San Glorio to Riaño first, then continue on the P-210 for the Ebro section. Combined, it makes a superb full-day adventure from Ojedo with minimal repeated road.
