Marula

Portable Wikipedia on solar-powered embedded boards

๐ŸŒ The Vision

Marula was a project initiative to spread Wikipedia knowledge to places without internet access, using solar-powered embedded boards running a lightweight offline copy of the entire Wikipedia encyclopedia.

The project was developed with the support of the Wikimedia Foundation, with the goal of making the sum of all human knowledge accessible to everyone โ€” regardless of connectivity, infrastructure, or geographic location.

โšก How It Works

The concept combined several technologies:

Users within WiFi range of the Marula device could browse Wikipedia on their phones, tablets, or laptops โ€” even in remote areas, schools, and communities with no internet connectivity.
