Carrying the whole Wikipedia to places the internet cannot reach — on solar-powered embedded boards
Marula was a project initiative to spread the Wikipedia through solar-powered single-board computers: a PI-sized server with a full offline Wikipedia mirror, charged by the sun, publishing a local WiFi hotspot. No grid, no internet — just knowledge, available offline. It was developed with the support of the Wikimedia foundation.
The full project proposal (~1.3MB PDF) covered hardware choices, power budgets and the deployment vision; it is preserved in the original project archive.
Not every hero project ships. Marula's value was the probe: proving that a few hundred dollars of commodity hardware could deliver the sum of human knowledge to a classroom with no infrastructure. The engineering muscle built here — minimal OS images, power budgeting, offline content delivery — flowed directly into every distro on this site.
The marula tree gives shade and fruit across the African savanna — an apt name for a project broadcasting free knowledge under the sun.
